You have to become someone worthy of earning your own self-respect
I've had the feeling for a while that men and women tend to mean different things when they use the word "respect". Despite varying definitions that came out of a small personal survey, I found that men overwhelmingly believe respect is something you earn.
A friend and mentor of mine called me the other day to tell me he was watching a video on YouTube that made him think of me, particularly a phrase he thought I'd like (I did). It was: "You have to become someone worthy of earning your own self-respect".
If respect is in fact earned, it follows that it's just as important or even more so, to earn your own self-respect. It's simple, probably obvious, but impactful. Become the type of person that, if you were to meet, would have your respect.
